2024 BCSS Champs: Day Three Recap

The final day of the 2024 British Columbia High School Provincial Track and Field Championships took place on another hot day in Nanaimo. While the races and memories wrapped up on day 3, we have had several new champions crowned and team banners awarded, so let's take a look at the final events of the championships.

While the morning saw qualifying rounds for later events, our first finals on the track were the 1500m Racewalk events. 

In the Senior Girls event, Amazia Wandzura from Pacific Academy defended her provincial championship with a time of 7:41. Grace Wong and Livia Fatovic-Spurr also went sub-8 minutes for second and third, respectively. Lowell Solmes of Killarney Secondary also defended his Senior Boys title with a time of 6:48, in a close race with Lincoln Froese (6:53) and George Dervishi (6:54). In the Junior Girls Racewalk, Mireya Tiamo won the championship with a 8:22 walk. Keira Blair took second and Chae Yoo took third. The Junior Boys podium featured upgrades from last year for each finisher, with Tristan Andrews upgrading last year's silver to a gold with a 7:23 walk. Adam Bellafquih (2023: 3rd) took silver and Hansen Hsu (2023: 13th) took bronze. 

The distance hurdle finals took place on day 3 as well. 

Maiya Brunoro of Langley Christian successfully completed the 400m/400m hurdle double, winning the Senior Girls 400m Hurdles with a time of 1:03. Arden Mathis won the silver in 1:05.05, and Delaney Self won the bronze in 1:05.74. Hayden Hall of Langley Fine Arts, who won silver in the 400m, is the BC Champion in the Senior Boys 400m Hurdles with a 53.81 run, very near to the record of 53.49. Will Van Shagen (54.75) and Finn Archer (58.43) were second and third, respectively. 

In the Junior Girls 300m Hurdles, Anika Timm won the championship with a 45.94 run. Portia Comber was second with a 46.11 second run, and Tanaz Aulakh-Kahlon third with a 46.79 second run. Zimo Liu, silver medallist in the 100m hurdles, was the Junior Boys 300m Hurdles champion with a time of 39.54. Ethan Moran was the silver medallist after winning bronze in the 100m hurdles, and Levi Venables was the bronze medallist. In the Grade 8 Girls 200m Hurdles, Lea Vorster won by over 2 seconds in 28.89 seconds. Jedidiah Poh was the Grade 8 Boys champion, in the same event. 

The distance athletes endured the heat of the day to produce some incredible runs. 

Yemane Mulugeta of LA Mathewson doubled back after his 1500m win on day 2 to win the Senior Boys 3000m final in 8:22. Charlie Mlotshwa added a silver medal to this week's collection, coming in at 8:26. Samuel May, steeplechase champion on day 2, took the bronze. Jaina Kang of Credo Christian, steeplechase champion on day 2, made it two gold medals. Kang won the Senior Girls 3000m in a time of 10:20. Rachel McDonald (silver medallist in the 1500m) won the silver medal in a time of 10:31, and Vita Thompson-Chang the bronze medal in a time of 10:38. 

Adrianna Buitelaar defended her Junior Girls 3000m title, in a dominant near-sub-10 run with a 10:01 performance. In a fierce battle for the last two podium spots, Sasha Dehal was the silver medallist in 10:30.69, and Indie Cudmore the bronze medallist with a time of 10:30.96. In the Junior Boys 3000m, Riley Simmonds completed the 1500m/3000m double, running 8:51. Isaiah Johnston won the silver medal, running 8:56, while Simon Heidt ran 9:02 for bronze. In the Grade 8 Girls 3000m, Lucy Orr is the new BC Champion. Laken Olson dominated the Grade 8 Boys 3000m, winning by over 30 seconds in a time of 9:39.
