This past weekend in Calgary was full of jaw-dropping performances from BC athletes.
Team BC was the main event at the 2025 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships, with many appearances in event finals and on the podium. Team BC even broke several national records!
With so many excellent performances, it's difficult to mention them all! Here are some of the headlines from this past weekend.
Lily Stroda Sets World Lead
All Heptathlon Performance records are noted by the Legion, although they cannot be found on Athletics Canada. We apologize should there be any error of fact as a result.
Lily Stroda of Kelowna took down the National U18 Heptathlon record set by now-professional athlete for Adidas Nina Schultz. Stroda, of Kelowna, scored 5573 points, over 100 points more than Schultz's previous record of 5406.
En route to the National U18 Record, Stroda put up two U18 Heptathlon Record performances amongst all of her strong showings in the 7 events. Here are her marks from the weekend in Calgary:
100mh: 13.66 National U18 Heptathlon Record
High Jump: 1.70m
Shot Put: 12.41m
200m: 24.94
Long Jump: 5.91m National U18 Heptathlon Record
Javelin: 32.93
800m: 2:25.01
According to the World Athletics ranking, this performance puts Stroda as the best U18 Heptathlete in the world right now, which is an incredible achievement!
BC took 3 of the 4 combined events championships this past weekend, with Nic Scarpino taking the U16 Boys Pentathlon and Chioma Uzozie winning the U16 Girls Pentathlon.
BC Girls Take the U16 Sprints by Storm
The U16 Girls 200m podium was a 100% BC podium - but that's not all. Each of the medallists had an excellent weekend in all of their events.
Avionne Dean was the champion, with a time of 23.77. Not only was that time a championship record, but according to Athletics Canada rankings, this would be a U16 Canadian Record (although they are not officially kept). Dean was the queen of the U16 girls short sprints, also claiming the 100m title with a time of 11.75w (+3.3).
Behind her, Payton Rogers also went under the old championship record with a 23.95 performance that puts her at 3rd fastest all-time for U16 girls in Canada. Rogers did the long sprint double, running 38.44 for the U16 Girls 300m title. This time puts her 3rd all-time according to Athletics Canada.
Jaylah Dennis rounded out the podium with an excellent 24.50 clocking. She also set a new championship record in the U16 Girls High Jump, with a leap of 1.87m. This mark is also a new National U16 Girls record (according to Athletics Canada all-time rankings). Dennis also rounded out her excellent weekend by claiming the silver medal in the U16 Girls 100m.
Dean and Dennis then closed the meet with teammates Victoria Cheung and Sofia Zenone (who was the silver medallist in the 300m) in the U16 Girls 4x100m relay, where they claimed the title in another Championship Record and a U16 Canadian Record (although those records are not official).
The U18 Girls 4x400m squad also showed up strong, winning the silver medal with Tanaz Aulakh-Kahlon, Lily Stroda, Sofia Zenone, and Alexia Latore (who won the 400m and won bronze in the 200m).
Overall, the BC Sprint Squad took the Championships by storm!
