2024 BCSS Champs: Day Three Recap


The 800m finals were a showcase of excellent tactical running in close races. 

Rory O'Brien of Sutherland Secondary is the BC Champion in the Senior Girls 800m this year in a close final, running 2:12 for the victory. Chloe Symon, last year's junior silver medalist, won the silver in 2:15.25, while Julia Malony rounded out the podium in 2:15.92. In another close final, last year's bronze medallist Maxwell Holmes of Pacific Academy took the gold this time around in the Senior Boys 800m running 1:53.33. Bernardo Sada won the silver in 1:53.57, and Noah Louwerse took bronze after winning silver in the 1500m on day 2. 

Maggie Epp, last year's bronze medallist, won the Junior Girls 800m title in 2:15. Lienke Raath, steeplechase champion on day 1, won the silver. Rachel Milau took home the bronze. In the Junior Boys 800m, steeplechase silver medallist Rhys Beaudoin won the event in 1:58, the only competitor to go sub-2 in the final. Ryland Neels and Henry Nestmann were second and third, respectively. Sophia Kruger was the Grade 8 Girls 800m champion this year in a close race that saw the top 4 competitors all crossing the line within the same second, while Carter Cunning stormed to a 2:08 clocking and the Grade 8 Boys 800m title. 

The sprint finale of the BC High School Championships was the 200m finals. 

Adam Sieben of Dutchess Park completed the sprint 100/200 double, winning the Senior Boys 200m title just ahead of 400m champion Pishon Haughton who took silver in 21.80, while Joel Breedveld took bronze in 22.23. Sieben's winning time was 21.78. Ludovica Avigini of Cowichan Secondary also completed the double, nearly going sub-25 with a 25.06 clocking for the gold in the Senior Girls 200m. Jaedyn McLaughlin won silver with a time of 25.73, and Michela Beuthin won bronze in 25.86. 

Alexia Latore broke the Junior Girls 200m record previously held by Emma Cannan en route to winning the event in 24.60 (-1.3), becoming the first junior girls champion to go sub-25. Kealayna Tupas-Singh also dipped under the old record, running 24.77. Lily Stewart took third in 25.74. In the Junior Boys 200m final, Nickolas Jang ran 22.68 for the win. Derek Frimpong, 400m champion, came second running 22.80. Tason Tran, 100m champion, came third running 22.86. The Grade 8 Girls 200m champion is Avionne Marie Dean, who now has three titles from this week and another Grade 8 Invitational record. Justin Ikwuegbu matched the Grade 8 Invitational record of 23.86 to win the Grade 8 Boys 200m.
