2024 BCSS Champs: Day Two Recap


Day 2 also featured the 1500m finals for junior and senior boys and girls. 

Alexa Dow of Frances Kelsey, last year's 1500m and 800m junior champion, was just off of the Senior Girls 1500m record en route to winning the event in a time of 4:27, winning by nearly 20 seconds. Rachel McDonald (last year's steeplechase bronze medallist) took the silver while Maella Hodgson (who won two bronze medals last year) took the bronze. Just 2 seconds separated the podium in the Senior Boys 1500m, with a close three-way battle to the line. Yemane Mulugeta of LA Matheson, who won two gold medals last year in Steeplechase and the 3000m, won the event in a time of 3:53. Noah Louwerse, last year's junior champion, crossed in 3:54 and Charlie Mlotshwa, last year's junior 3000m champion, in 3:55. 

In the Junior Girls 1500m, Adrianna Buitelaar, last year's silver medallist, won the title this year in a very fast time of 4:33. Sasha Dehal and Indie Cudmore were this year's silver and bronze medallists, respectively. Riley Simmonds took the Junior Boys 1500m title in a time of 4:02, while Miles Hayden won the silver and Isaiah Johnston won bronze. The only team events in track and field are the relays, and the first relay finals got underway with the 4x100m finals. 

In the Senior Girls 4x100m, Dr Charles Best Secondary won the provincial title, with York House in second and Saint Thomas Aquinas in third.

In the Senior Boys 4x100m, an incredible 6 teams clocked a sub-44 performance (averaging sub 11-second performances from each runner). The BC Champions were Robert Alexander McMath, with West Point Grey Academy second and Alberni District Secondary third. 

Robert Alexander McMath continued their relay success in the Junior Girls 4x100m, winning that title as well. New Westminster Secondary was second while Kitsilano Secondary was third. 

In the Junior Boys 4x100m, Vancouver College was close to the record with a 43.96 clocking. St Thomas Moore Collegiate won the silver, and Terry Fox Secondary won the bronze. 

The other relay finals that took place today were the Grade 8 4x400m finals, while the juniors and seniors qualified for finals that will take place tomorrow. The Grade 8 Girls champions are West Point Grey Academy, and the Grade 8 Boys Champions are Saint Thomas Aquinas.
