The eagerly awaited three-day event, the BC School Sports Track and Field Provincial Championships, is finally here! From June 6th to June 8th, hundreds of athletes from across British Columbia will gather at the Rotary Bowl Stadium in Nanaimo, BC. With a lot on the line, and all the preparation work done, athletes from Grade 8 to 12 will give it their all in pursuit of becoming a Provincial Champion. With anticipation running high, let's dive into the details so you can stay updated.

BC High School Championship Meet Records

Championship meets always promise excitement, and this one is no different. As the season has progressed spectacularly, we can anticipate some incredible performances and even some meet records. While we can't spotlight everyone, here are a few standout athletes and events to watch closely.
Senior Girls and Boys 400m
The top three ranked senior girls in the event are the only athletes in the field to have seed times under 58 seconds. Grade 12, Maiya Brunoro of Langley Chrisitan, holds the top seed with a time of 55.74 seconds. At the 2023 installment of the BC Provincial Championships Brunoro placed second in both the Senior Girls 400m and 400m hurdles with a times of 56.45 and 1:01.00, respectively. Not to mention she was the 2023 Canadian U20 Champion over the 400m hurdles, winning the title in 1:01.56. She will be looking to finish her high school career on a high note.
Maya Vizina and Chloe Symon, two Grade 11 athletes, come in ranked second and third, with seed times of 57.34 and 57.61 seconds, respectively. Vizina won the 2024 Island High School Championships by over two seconds with her time of 57.34. As for Symon, she won the Sea to Sky Zone Championships with her time of 57.61, over three and half seconds faster than second place. Symon holds a personal best of 55.37 seconds, which she ran at the 2023 U18 NACAC Championships to claim gold. She also is a force to be reckoned with over 800m having run sub 2:10 over the distance.
On the boys side Pishon Haughton of Okanagan Mission Secondary holds the top seed in the event by over two seconds with a time of 47.31. This time currently places him at the top of the Canadian ranking list in the U20 division. During the 2023 season he competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games where he represented Canada in both the 400m and 4x400m mixed relay. He is also the defending BC High School Senior Boys 400m Champion and is also entered in the Senior Boys 100m and 200m; he truly is a triple threat with personal bests of 10.80 over the 100m, 21.87 over the 200m and of course 47.31 over the 400m.
Senior Girls and Boys 1500m
This should be no surprise to anyone, a name that is well known within the BC track and field community and beyond is Alexa Dow. The Grade 11 athlete had a phenomenal 2023 track season. She placed fifth in the 1500m and seventh in the 800m at the Commonwealth Youth Games, earned silver in the 800m at the U20 Canadian National Track and Field Championships and ended the season ranked first in Canada in the U18 800m and 1500m with personal best times of 2:06.98 and 4:18.64, respectively. Dow comes into the 2024 Championship seeded first, with the next best seed time being 4:49.19, from Rachel McDonald.
Dow's Prairie Inn Harriers' teammate, Charlie Mlotshwa is the top seed in the event on the boys side. The Grade 11 from Oak Bay Secondary has a seed time of 3:57.96 listed. Mlotshwa too had an exceptional 2023 track season. At the 2023 Championships he set a Junior Boys BC Championship record in the 3000m with a time of 8:39.55. He went on to better that time at the U20 Canadian Track and Field Championships, crossing the line in 8:32.55. His BC counterpart was also in that race; Yemane Mulugeta crossed the line third, in 8:19.29. Mulugeta came into the 2024 BC High School Championships as the second seed with a time of 4:01.03. It is also worth mentioning that Mulugeta ran a Canadian Junior Half Marathon record of 1:06.43 back in February.
