2024 BC Champs: Preview, Performance Lists, Stream & More

Junior Girls and Boys Throws

Seeded first in all three of her events, Talia Phangura is the undeniable favorite for triple gold in the hammer throw (3kg), shot put (3kg) and discus (1kg). The Grade 10 athlete from North Surrey Secondary has had a great build up to the Championships with personal best after personal best. Looking back at last year, she was the Junior shot put and discus champion and hammer throw bronze medalist. Now in 2024, she is meters ahead of the competition. Her seed mark of 51.85m in the hammer throw betters the second seed by over 10m, her seed of 13.87m in the shot put betters the second seed by a meter and a half and her seed of 37.59m in the discus betters the second seed by over 5 meters.

In a similar manner, Gursher Gabri is top seed in the hammer throw (5kg), shot put (5kg) and discus (46.49m). The athlete from Enver Creek Secondary, was last year's hammer throw champion with a mark of 46.86m and he also placed second in the shot put with a mark of 12.58m. This year his seed marks are as follows: hammer throw (60.08m), shot put (14.81m) and discus (46.69m).

Senior Girls Triple Jump and Senior Boys High Jump

The top three seeds in the Senior Girls triple jump are all coming into the meet with seed marks of over 10.50m. Top seed Sofia Varma-Vitug leads the charge with a mark of 10.97m. Varma-Vitug was last year's provincial Junior Girls Champion and was an instrumental part in leading York House to their first ever track and field zone banner at this year's Sea to Sky Zone Championships with a gold in the triple jump, long jump, 4x100m, 4x400m, and silver in the 100m. Jasleen Nagra follows closely behind as the second seed with a mark of 10.94m, while Mbunya Tateh rounds out the top three seeds entering the event with 10.67m.

The Senior Boys high jump also promises to be a close battle for the provincial title. Alec Brent of Alpha Secondary and Caidyn Maver of St Thomas More both come into the meet with a seed mark of 1.95m, while Keegan Farrell of Fraser Lake Elem-Secondary trails their seed marks by only 1cm, with 1.94m.
