Senior Spotlight: Ryan Lofstrom is headed to Rutgers!

The dream of competing collegiately wasn't always on Lofstrom's radar. "When I first started track, I didn't know you could run track collegiately, partly because of my young age. But as I grew older, I became familiar with the collegiate scene and eventually made it a goal of mine to run collegiate track myself."

Lofstrom's recruitment journey was thorough and focused. "I found myself emailing lots of coaches from programs I found interest in and was able to make contact with quite a few of them. However, I only went on two visits, to Rutgers and Illinois State, as I felt these were the two best options for me. I decided to sign with Rutgers because of what their program has to offer academically and athletically, and I believe they give me the greatest shot at achieving my academic and athletic goals."

As he looks ahead to his collegiate career, Lofstrom is most excited about the level of competition. "With Rutgers being in the Big Ten, I'll find myself in one of the most competitive conferences in collegiate track. I love racing the best of the best, as it helps me run at a higher level myself."

Speaking of competing with the best, Lofstrom's experience representing Team Canada remains a defining highlight of his career. "Being a part of Team Canada for the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games was a true honor and a dream come true," he says. "At the games, the atmosphere was amazing and truly remarkable. I was able to make lots of new friendships and memories with athletes from all over the Commonwealth. Overall, the experience was a great success for me, as I overachieved on my goals and learned a great amount."

With the 2025 season on the horizon, Lofstrom's main focus is staying healthy. "After being injured for the first bit of last year, I don't have specific meets or times in mind right now; I just want to stay healthy and become the best version of myself on the track," he says.

To younger athletes dreaming of collegiate competition, Lofstrom offers wise words: "Give it 100% in every workout. No matter how hard it gets, keep pushing through. Perseverance is essential to success. And for those looking to compete in college, keep working hard for your goals. Bad things are bound to happen, but overcoming adversity will make you a greater athlete in the end."

As Lofstrom prepares to don the Scarlet Knights jersey and compete at the next level, he carries with him the lessons of the past and the promise of an exciting future ahead, with his senior high school season just around the corner.
