Sofia Varma-Vitug's journey in track and field started early, thanks to her mother's passion for the sport. "My mum signed me up for Track Rascals when I was 7 years old," Varma-Vitug recalls. Her mother's own high school track experiences inspired Sofia  to get involved. During her early school days, she was coached by Ms. Dalziel, who, despite her passing from cancer when Varma-Vitug was in grade 5, remains one of her favorite coaches. "Ms. Dalziel was a huge inspiration," Varma-Vitug shares. Another key figure in her early training was Coach Moseley Jack, the father of her current coach. "Coach Moseley passed away from cancer when I was in grade 8  He coached me throughout my JD track years, and he was the one who introduced me to long and triple jump."

Varma-Vitug's entire track career has been with the Kajaks Track and Field Club. "I remember my first day; everyone seemed very intimidating, but I slowly settled in," she says. Over the years, the club has become like a second family. "It is a very close, and supportive  community." Her siblings also compete with Kajaks, and her mother is a board member, making it a family affair.

Varma-Vitug attributes much of her success to the strong coaching she's received both at school and at the club. "Coach Jacob is my coach at both York House and Kajaks, which is helpful because he knows what's going on on both sides," she explains. This dual role was instrumental in York House's recent success. "This season, as a school, we won our first-ever track and field Zone Championships, and at BC School Sports Provincial Championships, we missed out on the Girls' provincial banner by just half a point." Varma-Vitug directly contributed to 33 of her school's 34.5 point total. "BCs was a crazy three days-basically warm up, compete, recover, repeat," she recalls. During this season, she set school records in the 100m, long jump, triple jump and 4x100m.
