With everything Duley has experienced, lessons learned, challenges overcome and with his potential far from being reached, collegiate athletics was definitely in the cards.
"I reached out to numerous schools, ranging from those in the United States to local ones. However, the first coach to initiate contact with me was Coach Rostam at the University of Toronto. After engaging with other schools, I concluded that UofT would be the ideal choice for combining academic excellence with athletic opportunities. I also took a visit and I was immediately captivated by the vibrant culture, diverse community, and overall atmosphere of the city. When I finally set foot on the track and field facilities, I was thoroughly impressed. The state-of-the-art equipment and the warm and inviting environment made me feel right at home. The team members were incredibly welcoming, and I swiftly realized that this would be an ideal place to embark on my athletic and academic journey."
Duley will compete during the U SPORTS indoor season, within the OUA Conference, where more life long memories will definitely be made. Being a varsity athlete is such a unique and amazing opportunity and experience. The possibilities are endless.
"I'm eagerly looking forward to the away meets and training camps. The thought of this reminds me of one particular experience that stands out in my memory. That was when I had the opportunity to join the Kajaks team on a trip to Chula Vista. It was an incredible time! I cherished every moment spent with my friends and engaging in rigorous training sessions. The positive energy and camaraderie among teammates made the experience even more enjoyable and fulfilling."
But before Duley heads to Toronto, he still has this 2023 season to finish off.
"I'm aiming to qualify for Team BC, where I would represent British Columbia at the U20 Nationals. Another goal I have for this season is to achieve a time of 10.5 seconds in the 100m."
As for final words of wisdom Duley has left us with this: "One piece of advice I would give to young athletes is to actively seek guidance from your coaches and find a supportive training group. Asking questions is crucial because coaches possess extensive experience and knowledge in the sport, allowing them to provide valuable insights, drills, and training plans that can help us reach our fullest potential. Additionally, surrounding yourself with a training group that motivates and challenges you is essential for achieving your goals. They can push you beyond your limits and create a competitive environment that fosters growth and improvement. By seeking guidance and building a strong training network, you'll enhance your athletic development and increase your chances of success."
