The University of New Mexico, nestled in sunny Albuquerque with over 310 days of sunshine per year, offers the perfect mix of world-class facilities, top-tier coaching, and a welcoming team environment. Beyond its enviable climate, UNM's athletic program shines as a powerhouse in the highly competitive Mountain West Conference, consistently producing elite NCAA Division I athletes across multiple sports, including track and field. For Hurtubise, the Lobos stood out not only for their athletic excellence but also for their supportive atmosphere, strong academic offerings, and the meaningful connections she built during her recruitment process.

Reflecting on her path to track and field, Hurtubise's beginnings were rooted in another discipline. "I was a competitive gymnast for 10 years, starting when I was 2," she shares. Injuries and a loss of passion for the sport led her to leave gymnastics at 12, but her athletic drive remained. "I started going to the track with my brother while he trained and did my own workouts. One of his coaches noticed me doing pistol squats and suggested I join the sprints group. Eventually, I was introduced to my current pole vault coach, Jamie Sinclair, and after my first practice, I was hooked. The technical aspect of pole vault and my gymnastics background made it a perfect fit."
