Canadian race walker Evan Dunfee made history once again, setting a new North American 20-kilometre race walk record at the Australian 20km Race Walking Championships. The 34-year-old Olympian from Richmond, B.C., clocked 1:17:39 to claim victory, finishing ahead of Australia's Rhydian Cowley (1:18:35).
Dunfee, a three-time Olympian, has long been a dominant force in Canadian race walking. He made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, securing Canada's first-ever medal in the 50km race walk with a bronze. He also placed fourth in the event at Rio 2016 and finished 5th in the 20km race walk at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This achievement follows another record-breaking performance earlier this year. In late January, Dunfee shattered his own Canadian 10,000m race walk record in Canberra, Australia, clocking 38:08.50-an 18-second improvement on his previous mark. His time also set a new Pan-American record.
With an impressive career spanning over a decade, Dunfee has claimed medals on the Olympic, World Championship, Commonwealth, and Pan American stages. Beyond his competitive success, he's a passionate advocate for clean sport and an ambassador for KidSport, using his platform to inspire the next generation of Canadian athletes.
As one of five Canadian male athletes already meeting the qualifying standard for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, Dunfee continues to push the limits of racewalking, proving that he's far from done rewriting the record books.
