When it comes to preparing athletes during the cross-country season, Scott takes a balanced approach to volume and intensity. "In cross country, we've started to emphasize higher volume than in previous years. Canada used to be cautious with building mileage for athletes in the 15-17 age range, but I believe we can challenge them more if we want them to excel in their later careers. We build gradually, adding race pace work and changes in tempo. It's all about creating a foundation that allows them to reach the next level."
This season, the Valley Royals are already making waves. "We just opened the season at the Vancouver Spirit Run. Riley and Samuel went 1-2 in the U18 Boys division, Adrianna won on the girls' side, and Parks took first in the U16 boys race, just to name a few. Everyone who raced did great! The athletes are looking strong, and we're excited for what's to come."
Scott shared his goals for the rest of the 2024 season, highlighting the personalized approach he takes with each athlete. "Our goals are different for each athlete, but for those like Adrianna, we're aiming for a top 5 finish at the U18 ACXC. Others are looking to make Team BC or perform well at Eastern Valleys. Wherever they are in their development, our focus is on getting them to the next level from where they are."
Reflecting on how the 2024 season compares to previous years, Scott emphasized his ongoing commitment to learning and adapting. "I've been coaching for a long time, but I always try to stay honest and improve. I'm constantly learning from the athletes, other coaches, and my own experiences. We've incorporated things like 'Oregons,' workouts from Bowerman, and I've been using a blend of quality and volume training."
In closing, Scott spoke about the lasting impact he hopes to leave on his athletes. "When my athletes move on, whether it's to college or beyond, I hope they look back and remember their time fondly. I want them to love running, to cherish the friendships they've made, and to be proud of the experiences they've had. I hope I gave them a love for running."
With decades of experience, a commitment to his athletes, and a passion for the sport, Scott Svelander continues to build on the Valley Royals' rich legacy. As the 2024 cross-country season unfolds, the future looks bright for this storied program.
