2024 BC Athletics Track & Field Championship Jamboree Recap

The 2024 BC Athletics Track & Field Championship Jamboree took place from July 12-14 at the Nanaimo Rotary Bowl. This provincial championship for U16, U18, U20, Senior, and Para athletes also served as the selection meet for the U18 and 15YO BC/Yukon Command Legion Teams, set to compete at the 2024 Canadian Youth Legion Track & Field Championships in Calgary, AB, from August 9-11.

Notable Performances

Congratulations to all those who competed, to those who ran, jumped, and threw. While we can't possibly include everyone within this article, it does not mean that your hard work on the track and in the field goes unnoticed!

Throws: Elise Drake, the 2024 U20 National Champion in the hammer throw, continued her dominance by becoming the Provincial Champion with a mark of 50.31m. On the men's side, Deven Marrero, the U20 National Runner-up, secured gold with a throw of 58.12m. In the U18 hammer throw, Chase Longley won with 55.64m, while Talia Phangura repeated what she did at the 2024 BC School Sports Championships, claiming triple gold. She dominated with marks of 55.05m in the hammer, 35.79m in the discus, and 15.36m in the shot put. Gursher Gabri showcased his skill in the U16 hammer throw with a remarkable 64.95m, over 30m further than second place. In the javelin, Erika Burry won the U18 women's division with a mark of 42.66m, and Griffin Cole took first in the men's division with 59.29m.

Jumps: Sofia Varma-Vitug, fresh off a fourth-place finish at the U20 National Championship, soared to 12.23m in the U18 triple jump to secure first place. In the men's U20 triple jump, there was a close battle between Lyle Lo of the Kajaks and Divine Aniamaka of the Vancouver Thunderbirds. Lo leapt over the 15m mark, taking the win with a jump of 15.09m, while Aniamaka placed second with a distance of 14.84m. Caidyn Maver excelled in the U20 men's high jump, clearing 1.90m to take first place, while Jaylah Dennis won her respective U16 division with a jump of 1.74m.
