Among Wong's fondest memories in track and field to date are the bonds forged and experiences shared with teammates. "My favourite memory within the sport has got to be going on trips and meeting new friends," she reflects. "My most memorable trip was going to Legion Nationals in 2023 with Team BC. I met so many amazing people both on the team and from around the country." For Wong, these connections are what defines her high school track and field experience. "Nothing compares to high school track and field," she asserts. "We compete for each other rather than for ourselves. We put a huge emphasis on the word TEAM itself."
It was Wong's five years in high school that really taught Wong about the ability to push herself and dream big. "For as long as I can remember, I always wanted sport to be in my life," she shares. "Both before and after my 2023 season, I decided to reach out to a few schools with my times and to see what would happen." The recruitment process proved to be both fun and stressful, but ultimately, UBC stood out the most. "In the end, I chose UBC because of their reputable academic and athletic programs," she explains.
As Wong looks ahead to the 2024 season, her goals are clear: to set personal bests in all of her events. Reflecting on her journey, she offers advice to her younger self and aspiring collegiate athletes. "It is important to take training and competing seriously, but not so seriously that you don't have fun anymore," she advises. "As for recruiting, it is a good idea to reach out to coaches of programs that you are interested in before your grade 11 season, so that you can get your name out there and let them know that you are interested."
