Arjun Sandhu Has Burst onto the Scene

During the 2023 season, as a Grade 9 athlete, he competed in his first year of the junior division at the BC High School Track & Field Provincial Championships. He placed second in the 3000m, fifth in the 1500m and sixth in the 800m. This was followed by a first place finish in the 800m, 1200m and 2000m at the BC Club Provincial Championships a month later. It was at the Club Championships that Sandhu secured his spot to represent Team BC at the Legion National Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec. "I was nervous because I was running against runners I had never competed against, but I did better than I thought I would. I ended up setting a U16 National Record in the 2000m."

Having only joined a track club the year before, it is clear Sandhu has a great talent for running, especially having set a national record and winning a national title in such a short span of time. That being said behind every great athlete is a great support system and Sandhu attributes a lot of his progress to his training group and coach.

"My training group is amazing because we always have fun but become serious when the workout starts. We all support each other and cheer each other on. My coach Ron Loewen is another big part of my success because he knows the amount of training and mileage each athlete needs and what paces they need to hit for every workout. He helped fix my form and improve my speed and stamina. Before Legions I wasn't sure how intense or long my training should be, but he kept training simple and his motto was to work smarter, not harder."

Now with a few seasons under his belt, Sandhu is resting and recovering before a new track season starts.

"I am going to set some new goals for 2024 and hopefully be able to exceed them again."
