It has not just been these past two seasons in which the Wolves have left their mark on the trails of British Columbia, however. They have been a leading program for quite some time, on the track as well.
"Off the top of my head, in terms of cross country, we have won seven BC High School Championships on the girls side, four silvers, with one boys team in there, and then multiple bronze team medals. In terms of track and field, we have finished fourth in the province on a number of occasions, have had well over 15 relay medals and also a number of individual medalists such as Katherine Tourigny who graduated in 2012, Sophie Dodd who graduated in 2014 and Alex Pescitelli 2018, just to name a few."
But with the 2023 BC High School XC Championships just around the corner the Wolves have some more business to attend to.
"I think we have podium potential in our senior teams. I would like to see us achieve this. For athletes, putting in their best race during the most important race of the year is something special. So if everyone runs to their potential on the day, I think the teams will do quite well."
Dawson has clearly created quite the running community at West Point Grey Academy. Not only have his athletes had success during their time in high school, but alumni have gone on to compete at the university level, provincial level and even national level. From time to time, athletes have even come back to help coach, be it in the junior school, senior school, or both. So with that Dawson had a few parting words.
"I really enjoy seeing our athletes accomplish their goals, seeing alumni go on to continue the sport. Four our of five of our captains from the 2022 season are running at university this year. Athletes have come back as assistant coaches for both cross country and track. It is these sorts of things that when I reflect upon it, are the things that bring me the most gratification. Just seeing that this world meant something to them."
