Arbutus Meadows XC Rumble: A New Cross Country Classic in the Making
As the cross country season wraps up, with the BC School Sports Provincial Championships just a few weeks ago and the 2024 Athletics Canada Cross Country Championships on the horizon, a new event has left its mark on British Columbia's running scene. On October 5, 2024, the Arbutus Meadows XC Rumble made a stellar debut, drawing athletes of all ages to the picturesque venue in Nanoose Bay. Organized by the Nanaimo Track and Field Club, this inaugural event has already positioned itself as a potential host for future BC Provincial Championships-and even the Athletics Canada Cross Country Championships.
The race brought together a diverse field, from the youngest Track Rascals to seasoned Masters athletes, fostering a true celebration of cross country running. Set against the backdrop of Arbutus Meadows, the course offered a mix of challenges and open spaces that delighted competitors and spectators alike.
Making History on the Course
With this being the first-ever Arbutus Meadows XC Rumble, every victory was a course record in their respective divisions. High school athletes, in particular, shone brightly, including Finn English and Brynne Reilly, who claimed victories in the U14 3km race with times of 10:54 and 11:05, respectively.
The U16 3km race saw standout performances from Noah Sexton (10:25) and Skyla Lewis (11:22). Reflecting on her experience, Lewis remarked, "The course was great and fun to run. The open field at the end let me kick to get first. It was my first race of the season and I felt super good and fast."
In the U18 5km event, Rhys Beaudoin blazed to victory in 16:32, while Claire Babiuk dominated the girls' race with a time of 19:02. The longer 8km course for U20, Senior, and Masters athletes saw impressive performances from Charlie Mlotshwa (25:12) and Monika Arcadi (30:29), who recorded the fastest overall times in their categories.
A Legacy in the Making
Adding to the event's excitement, former Nanaimo Track and Field Club member Jason Bunston-a Canadian cross country legend, former National XC Champion, former NCAA 3k and 5k Champion, and former national and record holder in the 3k and 5k-returned to his roots to award medals to high school athletes. His presence underscored the rich legacy and future potential of the event.
The Next Championship Venue?
The Arbutus Meadows venue, with its stunning scenery and challenging terrain, has already caught the attention of BC Athletics. The organization is touting it as a potential site for major cross country events, including provincial and national championships. With its strong turnout, positive feedback, and seamless execution, the inaugural Rumble has set a high standard and hinted at even greater things to come.
