Locals shine at Harry Jerome Track Classic


Moving into the sprints, Adam Sieben, fresh off his double gold at the 2024 BC School Sports Provincial Championships, achieved a personal best of 10.63 seconds in the 100m heats. In the final, he finished third with a time of 10.69 seconds, trailing Joseph Amoah of Ghana and Brandon Letts of Eclipse Track and Field Inc. Makenna Self of the Coquitlam Cheetahs, also took on a field of women in the 100m. She placed seventh in a time of 21.41 seconds into a slight headwind. 

As for the throws, British Columbia definitely has the best! 2024 BC High School Champion, Roman Yeterian, achieved a personal best in the shot put, throwing a distance of 16.35m. While Olympian, Liz Gleadle, a Kitsilano High School and UBC graduate, won the javelin with a mark of 61.32m. Gleadle is the Canadian Record Holder and NAIA Record Holder in the event. Other top throwers include Adam Keenan of the Athletics Victoria Track and Field Society, who placed third in the hammer throw with a best mark of 72.81m. Keenan first competed for Canada at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships and since then has gone on to represent Canada on multiple occasions. On the women's side Kaila Butler was the top BC finisher, placing sixth with a mark of 63.70m. While, in the discus throw, Agnes Esser placed first with a mark of 59.59m. She is currently ranked 64th in the world in the event.

The Harry Jerome Track Classic continues to be a significant event for track and field athletes, providing a platform for local talent to shine on both national and international stages.
