Athletes Shine at the Surrey Championships

The distance races added more heat to an already warm week at the track, with exciting battles across the board. Yemane Mulugeta, defending provincial Senior Boys steeplechase champion, won the 3000m by a margin of 30 seconds and also secured gold in the steeplechase. Meanwhile, Maxwell Holmes ran an excellent 1:56 800m to take the Senior Boys title. The two met in the 1500m final, with Holmes taking the victory over that particular distance in a time of 4:03.68, and Mulugeta close behind in a 4:06.65.

In the girls distance races, the McDonalds dominated across the distances. Rachel McDonald won the Senior Girls 3000m with a margin of 31 seconds and the 1500m with a margin of 9 seconds and a time of 4:51. In the Senior Girls steeplechase, Catelin McDonald won with a time of 7:51.95, a gap of 40 seconds to second place.

In the Junior Girls long jump, the podium was decided by a matter of just 1cm. Paige Bailey came out on top with a leap of 4.60m. Jasleen Nagra, last year's provincial silver medallist in long jump, won the Senior Girls competition with a jump of 5.16m, close to her silver medal mark. Nagra also won the triple jump competition, an event she was crowned provincial champion in last year. Another notable jump performance came from the Junior Boys high jump, where both Elijah Elguezabal and Griffen Smith leaped 1.75m, with Elguezabal given the gold on countback. A jump of 1.75m may suggest a podium performance at provincials is in the cards for these two, based on last year's results.

These are just some of the exciting performances to come out of the Surrey Championships, and we can't wait to see how these athletes perform as they advance to the zone championships in two weeks time.
