The VS2S Zone Champs Delivered Sun & Excitement!

Yesterday the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships took place at Jericho Beach Park and the performances and weather did not disappoint! With the Pacific Ocean in the background and the sun shining through the course, there was nothing to complain about. 

Each division was competitive, with teams putting their best foot forward in order to secure a spot at next week's BC High School XC Championships set to take place at Crescent Park in Surrey. The Junior Girls raced over 4km, with 38 teams on the starting line, the Junior Boys also raced over 4km, with 39 teams on the starting line. As for the Senior Girls, who raced over 5km, 34 teams were competing for their berth to provincials, while the Senior Boys, who raced over 5km as well, had 38 teams going head-to-head. 

As for how many berths for advancement were up for grabs, see below.

  • 'A' Senior Girls: 2 team, 3 individuals

Now for the good stuff, let's get into the results!

AAA

Some familiar names were on top of the podium. Delphine Gosselin of Kitsilano who has taken the win at various VSSAA League meets this season came away with the Senior Girls 'AAA' title, finishing the 5km course in a time of 18:42. Chloe Symon of Lord Byng, who is known for her speed on the track over 400m, placed second running a time of 18:51. Maggine Cormack of Handsworth rounded out the podium running 19:46. As for the Senior Boys, there was a field of 98 athletes. Kai Martland, who just signed with the University of British Columbia, where he will be studying Kinesiology, took first place with a time of 16:05. Jame Doughty followed behind for second, running 16:23 and Lowell Solmes was third in 16:40!

AA

The Senior Girls 'AA' division saw 79 athletes race over 5km. Rory O'Brien of Sutherland took the title with a 12 second lead. She ran a time of 19:26, with Clare Goodison of Windermere placing second in 19:38. Rachel Milau of West Point Grey Academy took the last medal position, crossing the finish line in 19:55. As for the Senior Boys, West Point Grey Academy pulled off an impressive podium sweep. Andrew Neill took the crown, winning the race by over 40 seconds. He ran the 5km course in 16:19. His teammate Cole Timko was second, running a time of 17:06 and Spencer Blomerus, who was the 2023 BC High School Junior Boys 400m Champion was third in 17:47.

As for 'A' division, Mika Shadforth of St John's took the win in the Senior Girls race running a time of 22:19, over a minute faster than second place finisher Maria Barrable. Naomi Schramm of Fraser Academy was third in a time of 24:52. On the Senior Boys side, Tristan Andersen-Williams of Stratford Hall was first in a time of 19:57. Viv Anderson-Frrancois was second in 20:13 and Lukas Tudori third in 20:43.
