Top Performances: LMISSTFA League Championships

Athletes from the LMISSTFA took to the Rashpal Dhillon Track & Field Oval yet again, this time for the LMISSTFA League Championships. This meet was a qualifier for athletes to advance to the Vancouver Sea to Sky (VS2S) Zone Championships - the last stop before the BC High School Track and Field Championships in early June.

The qualifying process for the VS2S Zone Championships? Top four in each event advance.

Here are just some of the highlights.

Ryan Chin of Vancouver College had an impressive showing, winning both the Junior Boys 100m (11.47) and 400m (53.95) and placing second in the 200m (23.80), with Spencer Blomerus of West Point Grey Academy taking top spot in that race, edging out his competitor to run 23.41.

The great performances in the sprints didn't stop there. Mattias Eastman of Vancouver College dipped under 11 seconds, to win the Senior Boys 100m with a time of 10.95. He also won the 200m with a time of 22.45, winning by an impressive margin of almost a whole second.

Luc Primeau took the win in multiple events as well, picking up first place in both the Junior Boys 100m hurdles (16.26) and 300m hurdles (44.08). His teammate from Vancouver College also swept the hurdle events - Jose Montessori won the Senior Boys 110m hurdles (15.23) and 400m hurdles (1:00.29).

Another impressive performance includes Declan Warburton's 400m win in the Senior Boys division, winning by over a second and a half with a time of 52.98.

Now for the distance events.

Cole Timko of West Point Grey Academy was a force to be reckoned with, winning the Junior Boys 800m, 1500m and 3000m races. His winning time in the 800m of 2:06.51 bettered the next fastest competitor by over 8 seconds. Same goes for the 1500m where he won the race by over 12 seconds, running a time of 4:18.26.

West Point Grey Academy's dominance in the distance events continued with Peter Neill winning the Senior Boys 3000m with a time of 9:03.24. His teammate, Tommy Gibson, took first in the 1500m Race Walk with a time of 7:49.32.

As for the field events Ian Tyler of Saint Georges jumped to 1.76m in the Grade 8 Boys high jump, a mark that would have won gold at the 2022 BC High School Track and Field Championships by 16cm. He also won the long jump with a distance of 5.52m and the shot put with a throw of 10.93m.

Will Curtain of Vancouver College won the Junior Boys Hammer throw by over 20m, with a best throw of 41.69m.

Now for the girls.

Jordyn Reed ran and jumped her way to three individual first place performances. She won the Senior Girls 100m (12.44) by over a second, the 200m (25.98) by over 3 seconds and the long jump (5.13m) by 50cm. Her Crofton House teammate, Amelia Kristen also showed her strength in both sprint and jump events. She won the Senior Girls 100m hurdles (14.53) by over three seconds, the 400m hurdles (1:02.66) by over thirteen seconds and jumped to a first place tie in the high jump with a mark of 1.50m. Kristen's time of 1:02.66 would have won gold at the 2022 BC High School Track and Field Championships.

Rachel Milau of West Point Grey Academy also had an impressive meet. She placed second in the Junior Girls 200m (27.64), first in 400m (1:01.32), winning by over five seconds, and first in the 800m (2:28.55), showing her range over a variety of running events.

Another impressive set of performances includes Ana Montessori of Little Flower winning both the Grade 8 Girls 80m hurdles in a time of 13.06 and 300m hurdles in a time of 54.15.

Just like their boys team, the girls from West Point Grey Academy took command of the majority of the distance races. With the exception of the Grade 8 Girls 800m and 1500m which saw Jamie Armstong (2:32.76) and Lily Mindell (5:35.33) of York House take first, Isla O'Flaherty Wills of Little Flower who won the Junior Girls 1500m steeplechase and Lucy Shen who came first in the Junior Girls 1500m race walk,  WPGA saw their athletes cross the line first.

In addition to winning the Grade 8 Girls 800m, Jamie Armstrong won the high jump by 15cm, jumping 1.50m. Vanessa Pang of Crofton House also won her event by a big margin, jumping 10.08m in the Grade 8 Girls triple jump with a mark of 10.08m, a distance that would have won the 2022 BC High School Track & Field Championships.
