TALLAHASSEE, FL - Valley Royals and Mennonite Educational Institute (MEI) athlete Adrianna Buitelaar capped an impressive XC season with a strong showing at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida. Competing in the U20 women's race, she placed 18th out of a field of 66 with a time of 20:45, marking one of the best Canadian U20 finishes at the worlds in recent history.
Looking back at the 2025 Canadian Cross Country Championships in London, Ontario, Buitelaar won gold in the U20 8km race, running 28:14.6 and earning her spot on Team Canada.
2025 High School Season
Buitelaar's 2025 season was one of the strongest in British Columbia distance running. On the high school cross country circuit, she won the Senior AA Girls title at the BC School Sports Championships in the 5km race with a time of 17:56.
On the track, it was all about momentum:
Ran a personal best in the 3000m of 9:29.78 at the Canadian Track & Field Championships U20/Open in Ottawa
Posted 4:26.46 in the 1500m indoors and 4:45.74 for the mile at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York
Placed 7th in the 3000m in 9:32.81 at the Nike Outdoor High School Nationals in Eugene, Oregon
Her consistency on both track and cross country made her one of the most accomplished U20 athletes in BC and Canadian distance running in 2025.
World Cross Country Championships Performance
At the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Buitelaar tackled a course that pushed every runner to their limits. Set at Apalachee Regional Park, the 6 km U20 women's course featured rolling hills, grassy stretches, red clay paths, sand patches, and water crossings. Runners had to navigate multiple loops, meaning every hill, turn, and tricky footing came back around to test endurance and strategy.
The course rewarded strength, balance, and clever pacing. Short climbs and quick descents kept athletes on their toes, while softer soil and tight turns demanded careful footing. One misstep could cost precious seconds, and the repeated obstacles challenged runners both physically and mentally.
In this deep international field, Buitelaar held her own with a strong 18th place finish, showing she could match stride for stride with some of the world's best young distance runners.
Looking Ahead
Buitelaar will continue her running career with the University of Colorado Buffaloes, a program known for developing elite distance athletes. Her 2025 season, including provincial and national titles and top international performances, sets a strong foundation for her collegiate career, future international competitions and final high school season on the track.
