Cross country is buzzing across BC! From the Okanagan to the Lower Mainland and over to Vancouver Island, there's no shortage of action as athletes turn up the pace early in the season.
Let's get into just some of the top performances over the last week and then it will be your turn to vote for BC Performer of the Week!
- Matthew Hrysio of Highland Secondary won the Junior Boys race at the Arbutus XC Rumble, crossing the line in 14:27 over 4km. In a field of 83 athletes, he finished more than 20 seconds ahead of second place and was one of just three athletes to break the 15-minute barrier.
- Claire Babiuk took the Senior Girls title at the Arbutus XC Rumble. Babiuk of Oak Bay Secondary topped a field of 68 athletes in the 5km race, clocking 18:33, more than 15 seconds clear of runner-up Charlotte Gough.
- Tamara Hamze dominated at VSSAA XC Meet #2. The Grade 8 Kitsilano standout impressed once again, winning the Junior Girls Division at Queen Elizabeth Park in 15:35.6. Competing up against older athletes in Grades 9 and 10, Hamze was the only runner to go under 16 minutes, finishing well ahead of Aileen Watson (16:04.3).
- Elliott Caramanolis claimed victory in the Junior Boys 4km at VSSAA XC Meet #2. The Grade 10 runner from Churchill took the win in 14:38.3, the only athlete in a deep field of 82 to dip under 15 minutes. His performance helped Churchill secure the team title with 28 points.
- Mei-Viz Lou impressed at OCSAA XC Race #2. Lou of Okanagan Mission Secondary took command of the Junior Girls Division, clocking 17:52 and finishing over a minute ahead of the next competitor (19:28). She was the only athlete in the field to run under 19 minutes.
