BC Future Stars: Meet Riley Simmonds

Sardis Secondary's Riley Simmonds has pieced together one of the most impressive seasons of any young runner in British Columbia, showing both consistency on the track and strength on the trails.

On the track, Simmonds first made headlines at the BC High School Track and Field Championships, where he captured the Junior Boys 1500m title in a tightly contested final. He also earned a top-four finish in the 3000m, demonstrating his ability to compete across distances.

His biggest breakthrough came at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, where he ran 4:06.92 for the mile. The performance broke the previous Canadian U18 record of 4:10.76 set by Olympian Lucas Bruchet. However, it was short-lived as fellow Canadian Brody Clark ran 4:04 in a separate race the same weekend, leaving Simmonds second on the all-time list.

Simmonds followed that by dominating the BC Championships, winning both the U18 Boys 1500m and 800m. His results earned him a spot on Team BC at the Legion Youth National Championships in Calgary, where he secured a bronze medal in the U18 1500m.

This fall, he has carried that momentum into cross-country. At the Big Valley Clash, Simmonds won the Senior Boys 5km in 16:20, defeating a field of 128 athletes. He then stepped into the Open 8km at the Vancouver Spirit Run, finishing 5th overall in 23:46 and crossing the line as the top U18 competitor.

With standout results in both track and cross-country, Riley Simmonds has quickly established himself as one of the most reliable and versatile junior runners in the province. His progression over the past year suggests there is much more to come.
